Duolingo is a remarkably innovative platform that aims to make learning accessible globally, offering a wide selection of languages to study, designed as your own personal class.

The vision: promoting diversity and heritage.

Whether you’re interested in mastering Spanish, French, or any of the +40 languages available, Duolingo is there to guide you through the process, breaking down language barriers.

While the platform primarily focuses on more widely spoken languages, it has also embraced the mission of promoting linguistic diversity and cultural heritage by teaching endangered languages like Hawaiian (the indigenous language of the Hawaiian Islands), Guarani (the indigenous language spoken in Paraguay) and Scottish Gaelic (a Scottish Celtic language)

The company’s mission: “Develop the best education in the world and make it universally available.”

Duolingo: the AI-powered teacher.

Duolingo employs artificial intelligence (AI) in various ways to enhance the language-learning experience.

  • Duolingo uses AI algorithms to personalize the learning experience by assessing users’ strengths and weaknesses, tracking progress, and adapting the difficulty of exercises accordingly. This means that if you’re struggling with a particular concept, the AI can provide more practice in that area to help you improve. Conversely, if you’re doing well, the AI will challenge you with more advanced material.

  • Duolingo combines language learning with AI-powered crowdsourced translation. Users of the platform are not only learners but also contributors to the translation of real-world content. Duolingo uses AI to analyze and rank user translations to identify the best and most accurate translations of sentences from articles, books, and websites…

Besides using what the community knows and advanced technology, the company has a team of over 700 employees from more than 30 countries, including experts in learning, as well as scientists and engineers.

Piano lessons now available!

The Official Duolingo YouTube channel shared on the 11th of October 2023 the newest and exciting offering: a music course!

As shared by Vanessa James — Engineering Director, learning Music has multiple side benefits.

“Studies show that learning music helps with reading, verbal, listening, and math skills. It can even delay the cognitive decline associated with ageing. Though music education has many benefits, more than 3.6 million students in the U.S. don’t have access to music education. And for those wanting to pursue further instruction, private lessons can cost up to $400 per session!” — Vanessa Jameson, Duolingo Duocon 2023

Introducing music lessons with Duolingo’s unique teaching style will revolutionize musical teaching. No more slogging through lengthy videos or dense texts for explanations. Instead, the app immerses you in a playful and interactive learning experience through engaging exercises.

As announced on the Duolingo blog, the music lessons are now hosted on a virtual piano keyboard, eliminating the need for a physical one!
